Marriage Problems Counseling in India: An Honest Guide From Astrologer Devraj Sharma

Most couples do not look for help on the day the trouble starts. They come after months or years of the same fight, the same silence, and the same tired feeling that nothing will change. If that is where you are, you are not weak, and you are not alone. Almost every marriage reaches this point.

I am Devraj Sharma, a Vedic astrologer with 25+ years of experience. I have listened to many couples at exactly this stage, so I want to say one thing before anything else: I am an astrologer, not a licensed therapist. I give astrology-based guidance in a calm, private conversation. When a problem needs a trained counsellor, a doctor, or a lawyer, I say so.

Marriage problems counseling (also spelled counselling) is a set of talks with a trained professional who helps a couple communicate, rebuild trust, and make decisions. This guide covers the six problems I see most in Indian homes, what research says about whether counselling works, what a session looks like, what it costs, and where my guidance fits.

Marriage Problems Counseling: Who Can Help With What?

Four kinds of people help with marriage trouble, and each does a different job.

A trained counsellor or psychologist works on how you talk, trust, and handle conflict. For most marriage problems, this is the main route.
A doctor or psychologist treats depression, anxiety, and sleep problems. If one of you has felt low or panicky for weeks, start there.

A family lawyer answers questions about maintenance, children, and property.
An astrologer like me reads the pattern in your birth chart and the timing of hard periods. I help you see why the same fight keeps coming back and when a difficult talk will go better. I do not treat mental health problems, and I cannot replace a counsellor.

Many couples use two of these together. A counsellor builds the skills, and I help you pick the right time to use them.

In-Law Problems in Marriage: When One Spouse Is Caught Between Two Families

In many Indian homes, a marriage is never only between two people. A new wife enters a family with its own habits. A husband stays a son while he becomes a husband. Researchers who study Indian couples have found that in-law trouble is one of the most common problems that bring couples to counselling and that many couples struggle to balance respect for parents with their wish to build their own marriage.

Here is how it often looks. A wife feels watched and judged in her own kitchen. A husband feels torn, so he says nothing, or he says, “Adjust a little.” She hears that he is taking his mother’s side. He hears that she is asking him to choose. Both feel alone, and the small fights grow.

The way out is to stop fighting each other and start working as a team. First, talk as a couple with no family around, and agree on what you both want. Second, let each person speak to their own parents: the husband to his, and the wife to hers. A request from a son lands softer than the same words from a daughter-in-law. Third, agree on three simple house rules, such as how often relatives visit, what stays private, and who decides about money and children. Fourth, if talks stay stuck, ask a respected elder or a counsellor whom both sides trust.

A chart cannot remove a difficult relative. It can show which months are likely to run hot, so you plan the big family talk for a calmer time. For more, see Husband Wife Problem Solution.

Husband-Wife Communication Problems: The Four Habits That Wreck Every Talk

Almost every couple who comes to me says the same thing: “We cannot talk.” The research group led by John Gottman studied many couples and found four habits that often appear before couples break up. If you can spot them, you can stop them.
Criticism attacks the person, not the problem. “You never think about anyone” is criticism. “I felt alone when you came home late” is a request. The fix is a gentle start. Say how you feel and what you need, and leave out “always” and “never.”

Contempt is the strongest warning sign in that research. It shows up as eye-rolling, mocking, name-calling, and talking down. The fix is appreciation. Every day, say one thing you value about your spouse out loud.
Defensiveness sounds like, “It is not my fault; you did the same.” It blocks the talk because the other person feels unheard. The fix is to own a small part: “You are right about that. I should have called.”

Stonewalling is shutting down: silence, leaving the room, or “nothing happened.” It usually means a person feels overwhelmed, not that they do not care. The fix is a planned break. Say “I need twenty minutes,” go and calm down, and then come back to finish the talk.

Pick one habit that belongs to you, not your spouse, and work on it for two weeks. A counsellor can coach you in the room. In my work, I look at how each of you handles anger and stress and which months run hotter, so you choose calmer times for serious talks.

Lack of Intimacy in Marriage: When You Live Like Roommates

Many couples tell me they still love each other, but they live like roommates. They share a house, a bed, and a schedule, and almost nothing else. Stress, children, work, health problems, and old hurts slowly push closeness out. Nobody decides it. It just happens.

The fix starts small. Spend ten minutes together every day with no phones. Say what you miss, not what the other person did wrong: “I miss talking to you at night” works better than “You never want me.” Tell your spouse one thing you appreciate each day. If the distance has lasted for months, or if physical closeness has stopped, see a counsellor. Some causes are medical, such as stress or health issues, so a doctor can help too.
Do not use astrology to avoid the conversation. A chart can show a heavy period, and that can ease blame. But the talk still has to happen.

Trust Problems in Marriage After Cheating: Can It Be Repaired?

Sometimes. Research says couples dealing with an affair face steeper odds in counselling than other couples, and gains can fade without follow-up. That does not mean it cannot work. It means it needs more care. Three things matter most. The affair must end completely. The person who cheated must tell the truth and accept the anger without blaming the spouse. And both people need a counsellor who works with affairs, because this is too heavy to handle alone. Give it months, not weeks. The hurt partner sets the pace.

Marriage Problems After a Love Marriage: When the Honeymoon and the Family Both Fade

Love marriage couples often carry a hidden belief: “We chose each other, so we should not have these problems.” So when the first fights come, they feel like failure. Add a family that never fully accepted the match, and every small issue turns into “we told you so.” What helps is to treat three things separately: your relationship, your family, and the belief. Your relationship needs the same skills as every other marriage. Your families need patience and small, steady contact, not one big fight. And the belief needs to go. Love does not stop fights. It gives you a reason to repair them.

Does Marriage Counseling Work? What Research and Counselors Say

For most couples who try it, yes. Studies and professional bodies report improvement for roughly seven in ten to three in four couples in counselling. Some well-studied methods, such as Emotionally Focused Therapy, report recovery from distress for about 70 to 75 percent of couples.

When to Go for Marriage Counseling: Signs It Is Time

  • The same fight keeps returning with the same ending.
  • You talk only about chores, money, and children.
  • One of you has started to think about leaving.
  • Contempt, silence, or constant anger has replaced warmth.
  • Trust has broken, and you do not know how to repair it.

Marriage Problems Counseling With Devraj Sharma: How I Work With Couples

I have read charts for 25+ years, and I have spent most of that time listening to people talk about their marriages. I cannot give you therapy. What I give you is a calm, private hour with someone who has seen your kind of problem many times and who will tell you the truth.

You send your birth date, time, and place, your spouse’s if you have them, and a few lines about what is happening. I study the chart before we talk. On the call, which runs [X minutes] in [Hindi / English / Gujarati], I explain what I see in simple words: how each of you handles anger, closeness, and stress, and which months look heavier or easier for hard talks. I answer your questions, including the hard ones, and I do not take sides.

You leave with [a written summary] and two or three clear steps. If a counsellor, doctor, or lawyer would help you more, I tell you directly. If a simple remedy fits your chart, I explain why.
